Tesla Model X beats Lamborghini and sets new record in drag race

8/25/2017

Picture
Two top-shelf Tesla cars both beat a Lamborghini Aventador, continuing to prove the technical advantages of high-end electric motors in acceleration.
A Tesla Model X and Model S, both P100D models with Ludicrous, edged out the Lamborghini in a quarter-mile drag race held by Brooks Weisblat of Drag Times at the Palm Beach International Raceway.
The Model X ended up setting a record time for a sport utility vehicle, according to the video.

The way Porsche creates carbon fiber wheels is beautiful

8/25/2017

Picture
If you've been following along lately, you've noticed that Porsche is quite excited to tell you all about its new limited-edition car. The 911 Turbo S is being offered in a small batch called the Exclusive Series, and it's serving as a 607-horsepower welcome mat for the Exclusive Manufaktur program. The latest fascinating tidbit about the car? You can fit carbon fiber wheels at all four corners.
Porsche is making these wheels in house, and it's using a rather large radial loom wheel to do so. The loom turns 18 kilometers of material into the base of a rim. More carbon fiber is applied to that base and more than 200 parts come together to create a wheel. It's then cooked up.

Using brutal machines, the wheels are tested over the course of 2,000,000 kilometers so Porsche knows they will hold up. Porsche has also put more than 4,500 test laps on these wheels on the racetrack. That's how you wind up with a wheel that you know is incredibly strong and durable, yet also lighter than aluminum wheels.
In fact, they''re both 20 percent lighter and 20 percent stronger than the standard forged alloy wheels fitted to a Porsche 911 Turbo S. They also cost about $18,000 for the 9x20 front and 11.5x20 rear wheels, and right now they're just an option for the $257,000 Exclusive Series Turbo S. We would be shocked, however, if carbon fiber wheels don't wind up on the options list for more Porsche vehicles down the road.
Heck, in five years you'll probably be able to spec out a Macan into the stratosphere and slap some 22-inch carbon fiber rollers on there.

Marlin wins! The massive fish that sank an entire boat and its crew

8/23/2017

Picture
Fishermen battling a massive black marlin off the coast of Panama took a turn for the worse when the fighting fish appeared to sink their boat.
Seen in a shocking sequence of photos capturing the event on Thursday, the boat teeters toward the hooked marlin splashing above the waves before gradually capsizing and vanishing in the deep.
As both astonishing and affirming as the pictures appear, that this single marlin surely out took an entire boat and its crew, the boat’s alleged manufacturer close to those involved explains otherwise.
It was allegedly a captain's error that submerged the ship following a rogue wave that knocked him off balance, the source wrote with Marlin Magazine's photo of the incident on their Facebook wall.
The manufacturer was quick to defend the ship's strength and performance writing that the boat has previously captured 'hundreds of Marlin without issue or concern.'

Picture
'Direct from Panama I was told that the sea conditions were not as calm as they seem to be in the pictures and the Captain was an experienced Captain,' they wrote.
The captain is said to have slipped while putting the boat in reverse or, backing down on the fish, to help reel it in.
That mistake by the ship's turbulence caused him to allegedly hit the throttle into full reverse causing the boat to abruptly lurch backwards and take on water.
'You can see how this might happen as you know when fighting a fish the Captain is facing aft with his hand on the throttles and when slipped the last thing your hand is holding onto is the throttle controls,' they wrote.
No one was said to have been hurt and all were rescued by the boat photographing the incident.
Sadly for the boat, it's said to have sunk to the bottom and the fish - who made a visible skip across the waves long after the boat was gone – may forever be known simply as 'the one that got away.'

Florida couple blow up their SUV with propane grill

8/23/2017

Picture
A couple have blown up their SUV in the middle of the road by lighting a cigarette while transporting a propane grill that was switched on.
Nobody was killed in the incident, which occurred at about 3.30pm on Sunday in Orlando, Florida, and left a red Kia Sorento on the side of the road with its roof blown partially off.
Police say a husband and wife were driving the Kia, which had a propane grill inside that had the gas valve switched on.

The wife lit a cigarette as the car was driving near the entrance to the Central Florida Fairgrounds.
The resulting explosion blew out the windows of the car and peeled open the roof of the car.
The car traveled off the road and crashed into a pole, police said.
The man and woman suffered burns that were not life-threatening, and were transported to a hospital.
No further information about the couple was immediately available.

This awesome Stop-Motion Teardown Of A Miata Engine Is Wrenching Porn At Its Finest

8/23/2017

Picture
Thanks to miracles of modern science, the invisibility cloak from Harry Potter has become a reality, and some genius YouTuber has decided—for whatever reason—to use it to tear down a 1.6-liter B6ZE Miata engine. Either that, or this amazing video is just stop-motion—it’s not entirely clear.
Few things in this word are as pleasing to the human eye as forged, cast and machined engine internals, but rarely do we get to see them without sweaty, hairy human appendages obstructing the view. Every now and then, though, we come across a stop-motion film (like this one of a Triumph rebuilding itself), and the world becomes a significantly better place.

A Driver Who Livestreamed Himself Doing 115 MPH Ended Up Broadcasting His Subsequent Crash

8/23/2017

Picture
Facebook live; it’s good for personal announcements, publicity stunts, or telling the world how gosh darn excited you are about your new talking Chewbacca mask. It’s not as great for capturing super dangerous stunts that put your life and others at risk. But that’s precisely what Onasi Olio-Rojas, the 20-year-old Rhode Island man in the above video did while joyriding yesterday morning on a Providence highway, hitting speeds of up to 115 miles per hour.
In the three minute long video, Olio-Rojas can be seen swerving in and out of traffic, sometimes using the shoulder to breeze past cars while topping out at 100 on at least two or more occasions. Thankfully the video cuts off right before the moment of impact, when he lost control of the vehicle and rear ended a dump truck.
Witnesses told police he was driving erratically when he lost control of his car, which spun sideways and then hit the truck. The car then shot across the road and crashed into the Jersey barrier.
Rescue crews had to extricate Olio-Rojas from the vehicle, but the driver of the truck was not injured.
As of 9:20 p.m. Wednesday night, Olio-Roja was listed in critical condition but is expected to survive his injuries. It’s unknown what reckless driving charges he may face if and when he comes to, but he is just damn lucky no one else was injured in his little stunt, because he’d likely be looking at manslaughter or murder charges, as well.

BEHOLD THE JAW-DROPPING MERCEDES MAYBACH 6 CABRIOLET, AN ABSOLUTE INSTANT CLASSIC

8/23/2017

Picture
Visitors to the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance typically spend an abundance of their time at the event wistfully observing that "The don't build 'em like that anymore."
But with the Mercedes-Maybach 6 Cabriolet, Mercedes has built one like the timeless beauties exhibited on the lawn, a devastatingly gorgeous instant classic ready to take its place alongside existing members of the vintage car pantheon.
"The Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 Cabriolet takes modern luxury into the realms of the ultimate in luxury, and is the perfect embodiment of our design strategy," explains Gorden Wagener, chief design officer of Daimler AG. "Breathtaking proportions combined with a luxurious "haute couture" interior help to create the ultimate experience," he continued.
Picture
While the Mercedes-Maybach 6 Cabriolet's sheetmetal offers a nod to the past of hand-crafted boattails, its powertrain looks only forward, with an all-electric drive system producing 750 horsepower that boosts the car to 60 mph is less than 4.0 seconds.
Top speed is electronically limited to 155 mph and the battery's driving range is 200 miles. A monstrous 350 kilowatt charging system will give the Mercedes-Maybach 6 Cabriolet enough extra juice for 60 miles of driving in just five minutes. Notably, this particular show car does not have the word "Vision" in its name, as have other concept cars that were not built with production in mind, so we can hope maybe that is hint that Mercedes will actually build a run of these incredible machines for future Pebble Beach shows.

Think Eclipse Traffic Sucks? Check Out The Plane Lineup At Madras Airport In Oregon!

8/22/2017

Picture
Those who thought they would beat the eclipse viewing traffic by soaring over it are getting a nasty reality check at little Madras Airport in central Oregon. The video below, shot by Portland NBC affiliate KGW's helicopter, shows an almost comically huge line of aircraft waiting to take the airport's main runway for departure. The planes in line for departure range from home-built kit planes to small corporate jets.
The town of Madras, which has a population of roughly 7,000 people on a normal day, saw hoards of people flood into the area to watch the once in a lifetime celestial event. The city sits perfectly on the "line of totality" and the area's weather this time of year is predictably ideal for viewing.

Making things more precarious, Madras has no air traffic control tower. So deconfliction and coordination of takeoffs and departures is done via open frequency, aircraft-to-aircraft communications. It is unclear if a temporary tower was setup for the eclipse rush or not. But regardless, with one 5,089 foot runway and one 2,701 foot runway available, and many dissimilar aircraft trying to use those runways, things can go wrong real fast. One airplane already crashed on Saturday while approaching the airport, with the pilot dying in the crash.
Hopefully everyone's trip home is safe and predictable

GM Approves C8 Mid-Engine Corvette for 2019!

8/18/2017

Picture
“The mid engine was signed off on last week, a 2019 with 3 or 4 models, top of the line being the “Zora” and I swear rumor has it 900 HP. They will try to compete with the Ferrari and Lambo (an probably at their prices) ……anyway it will be debuted at the Detroit Auto Show in Jan 18.”

“They will also definitely run the C7 thru 2019, simultaneously.”
They go on to say that the unveiling of the mid-engine was for engineers only and it was very well received.

If any of this is true, what we heard and posted a year ago looks like it may become reality with the C7 and mid-engine being built at the same time for a short period of time.

While it may be unrealistic that the top-of-the-line Zora will come out with 1000 HP, it is possible that the engine may be engineered to handle up to 1200 HP.

Hang on tight folks.  The Corvette world is about to get a whole lot more interesting!
