Ferrari Intends To Resume Production On April 14

3/27/2020

Ferrari was one of the first manufacturers to halt production at its Maranello plant in Italy due to the coronavirus outbreak. Initially, the company’s plans were to shut down its factory until March 27 but the unprecedented situation in the country is forcing the Prancing Horse to extend the production stop order.
Ferrari’s new decision is to resume production on 14 April 2020. It’s very important to note that this will happen only if the supply chain works without interruption and is able to provide all the necessary parts and components for the production process.
“All activities that can be conducted in smart working will continue to be performed as has been the case in recent weeks,” Ferrari explains in an official press release. “The company will continue to cover all days of absence to those unable to take advantage of this solution.”

The Maranello-based firm also says that “given the huge uncertainty and lack of predictability that the COVID-19 has created,” it will be in a position to provide further financial guidance to the investment community during a call on May 4, when its first-quarter earnings’ will be reported.
Just a few days after Ferrari announced it’s temporary stopping production on March 14, the supercar automaker was joined by rival manufacturer Lamborghini. Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, which currently owns Maserati, also said it is halting production in Europe on March 16.

According to the latest data from Worldometers, currently, there are 62,013 active COVID-19 cases in Italy, 3,612 of which are being described as critical.

World's first manned aerobatic drone shown pulling loops and rolls.

3/27/2020

This racy-looking 12-rotor coaxial multicopter has been filmed in Croatia pulling extreme rolls and loops, and carrying a human on board. Not at the same time, mind you, but still, to see a drone of this size pulling stunts like this is astonishing.
Built by Drone Champions AG, in order to promote its Drone Champions League video game, this is a full-sized, full carbon airframe with six arms extending outwards from an aerodynamically faired chassis, each with a pair of coaxial rotors mounted at the ends. A central seat can carry a passenger – not a pilot, as this drone is built to be flown from the ground by trained drone racing pilots over remote control.
The team took the "Big Drone," as it's called, to Vrsar, in Croatia, to put it through some extreme maneuvers, and a Red Bull detachment followed to film and photograph the event. With a dummy passenger on board, the team performed a bunch of wild aerobatic maneuvers, including extravagant rolls and loops, the likes of which we've never seen in a multicopter this large.

"We have developed and built the first-ever manned aerobatic drone with the vision to create a brand-new future racing experience and to recruit drone pilots through DCL – The Game," says Drone Champions founder and CEO, Herbert Weirather. "Everyone should have the opportunity to fly, and DCL – The Game provides a starting point."
There's no word as yet on whether the team plans to do manned aerobatic flights, and we suspect it'll remain that way for a while. But it's clear the machines can do it, leaving just the safety considerations to be taken care of.

Watch This Porsche 911 Turbo Pull Wheelies at the Drag Strip

The rear-engine layout of the Porsche 911 has some serious advantages on the drag strip. When you're launching from a standstill, having a lot of the car's weight directly over the rear axle helps you put the power down to the rear wheels. But it also means there's not a lot hanging over the front axle, making the 911 capable of serious wheelies when modified.

ESMotor, a Turkish tuning company, demonstrated that on Facebook earlier this week. The company posted a video of a 2016 911 Turbo S modified by ESMotor lifting both front tires at the drag strip. Despite the all-wheel-drive 911 clearly not having traction at the front, it still managed to run in the mid-eights on its quarter-mile run. As shown in the video, on its third run, the 911 crossed the line in 8.68 seconds and was going nearly 170 mph.
The company hasn't listed a power output for its full TT kit, but with a 0-62 time of 2.06 seconds and 0-124 of 5.28 seconds, it's clearly putting out some insane numbers. For reference, our last instrumented test of the 911 Turbo S saw the car hitting 60 in 2.6 seconds and dispatching a quarter mile in 10.9 seconds at 124.4 mph. So clearly this isn't just a grip upgrade; the ESMotor modified 911 charges harder from the beginning and carries a massive speed advantage down the entire strip.
Yet, it's not even the fastest car ESMotor has built. The company claims that its full suite of mods—including custom turbos, ECU tuning, transmission upgrades, and more—can boost output to around 1800 horsepower. That's gotten one of their cars into the sevens, ripping through a quarter mile in 7.95 seconds at a bonkers trap speed of 190 mph.

Transition to winged flight marks another world-first for Jetman

3/23/2020

Picture
After demonstrating its autonomous VTOL capabilities last December, the Jetman team has now joined the dots to show how it can transition from an electronically balanced hover to super-fast winged flight in a demo done over Dubai on Valentine's day.
The winged flight capability sets the Jetman team apart from other jet-powered personal flight devices like jet boards, jetpacks and jet suits, because it allows more efficient flight at very high speeds of up to 400 km/h (250 mph), as well as some pretty awesome aerobatic capabilities. The Jetman team is the only group willing to take its device up to high altitudes at this point, and has flown alongside airliners in previous flights when launched aerially out of other aircraft.
In this new video, Nathan Finneman hovers briefly after takeoff before hammering the throttle and rocketing the new four-turbine jet wing up to an altitude of 1,800 m (6,000 ft) over the city of Dubai, performing some gratuitous loops and then pulling the parachute cord for a soft landing. No point wasting fuel on a VTOL landing when a 'chute will do the job just fine!
The entire flight lasted just three minutes, reflecting just how fast this jet wing can fire itself skyward. The transition to winged flight looked pretty much effortless, Reffet accelerating away at an astonishing rate to catch some air under the wing and swoop upward. It makes for pretty amazing viewing in the video below.
