Jaguar resurrecting the 50 year old E-Type production

5/14/2014

Jaguar has unveiled plans to rebuild its iconic E-type - the first time a new version of the firm’s most famous model will be recreated since the final one rolled off the production line in 1975. But before any would-be buyers get over-excited, the 2014 version will be confined to a strictly limited run of just six cars - completing a series of special Lightweight E-types the firm failed to finish more than 50 years ago. The Midland car-maker revealed it plans to build six brand new ‘Lightweight’ E-types – the ‘missing’ six Lightweights that were never built from an intended 18-car series. The project is Jaguar’s first ever foray into the recreation field and has been made easier by the firm’s ever-increasing use of aluminium in its 21st century cars. Jaguar already uses the lightweight metal extensively in models such as the XJ and the F-Type, with plans to extend this further with the next generation of models including its compact saloon the XE, which is due to be unveiled next year.
The new E-types, constructed entirely from aluminium, will be assigned the six remaining chassis numbers originally allocated in 1963

All six vehicles will be built as perfect reproductions and to the exact specifications of the original 12 cars - including the 3.8-litre straight-six engine - and the first of the new cars will make its public debut later this summer. They will be hand-built in the traditional manner by Jaguar’s expert craftsmen. Jaguar’s Lightweight E-type project originally got underway in February 1963, with the objective of building 18 ‘Special GT E-type Cars’.
Only 12 of the aluminium bodied Lightweight E-types were eventually built by Jaguar’s competition department, the last in 1964, the remaining six designated chassis numbers having lain dormant, until now. Eleven of the 12 that were originally built are believed to survive today. The Lightweight weighed in at 250lbs less than a standard E-type, thanks to its all-aluminium body and engine block, a lack of interior trim and exterior chrome work and a host of further weight-saving features including lightweight, hand-operated side windows. The Lightweight E-types were raced by motorsport legends such as Graham Hill and Jackie Stewart. Buyers with deep pockets are being given the chance to own one of the six new Lightweight E-types, though Jaguar said it expects “high demand” for the six cars. In a statement the company said: “Established Jaguar collectors, especially those with historic race car interests, will be prioritised amongst those potential customers who express interest.” The Jaguar E-type was produced between 1961 and 1975. Just over 72,500 were built.

An original 1966 Shelby GT350H racing 48 years later.

Its a rare sight to see a 48 year old car racing on a modern day track , but when your talking about racing an original 1966 Shelby as it left the showroom new...that's a whole different level.
Meet William Miller, owner of this gorgeous 1967 Shelby GT350H. Its rare enough that its an original Shelby, but what makes this car a degree even more rare is it's the infamous Hertz edition.  Shelby struck a deal with the Hertz Corporation in 1965 to produce a special line of G.T. 350s for rent that, after their rental-car lives were finished, were returned to Ford, refurbished, and sold to the public as "GT 350-H" models. Most Hertz cars featured gold LeMans stripes and rocker panel stripes, although a few were white with blue stripes. The first 85 Hertz cars were available with four-speed manual transmissions and Hertz advertised them as "Rent-a-Racer" cars. During rental, these cars were sometimes used as production class cars at SCCA events, and were rumored to have been returned to Hertz with evidence of roll bars being welded in.Hertz ordered the last 800 models with black paint, gold stripes and black interior, as well as automatic transmissions. William has owned the car for more than 35 years, and races it like its a new car, and he doesn't plan on retiring it anytime soon. A true Breed of Speed enthusiast

This Toyota Hybrid Racecar Destroy's the Competition.

I'll be honest, when it comes to Hybrids, i'm not a fan. Its not because of the green peace, earth loving culture that follows it, its because I am a motorsport purist, that bases my passion off the raw sound of an exhaust note. However with that being said, my opinion on hybrid race cars has turned a page for the better. With the McLaren P1 coming out, I started to appreciate the raw acceleration that an electric car can produce. It really became apparent after I saw the video of Toyota's ECM Hybrid race car overtaking pretty much ever race car on the track. Watch the video, and if your not impressed, then I have no words for you.

Barn-find Ferrari Dino gets brilliant auction catalog description

Barn-find Ferrari Dino gets brilliant auction catalog descriptionThe obvious by any other name ... adds value?By Alex Nunez May 5, 2014 / Photos by Silverstone Auctions

Barn finds are often discovered in rough condition. That sort of comes with the territory, since years of stasis and neglect aren't kind to automobiles. In some ways, that's part of the attraction of the barn find—the challenge of returning a special car to its former glory. Still, auction houses tasked with moving said metal need to make it sound as desirable as possible in order to engage bidders.

Silverstone AuctionsHere's a brilliant example. The Silverstone May Auction is scheduled for the 24th, and one of the cars up for grabs is this 1973 Dino 246 GT. Stored in a leaky garage since 1975, the low-mileage car—it only has 13,942 miles on the odo—is now a pricey and painstaking restoration project waiting to happen.

The catalog writer, tongue firmly in cheek, has some fun with it, describing the finish as the "rare Verdi Pino colour (with rust brown details)" and the overall condition as having "suffered from a severe case of what some may call water staining, whilst others would say it's simply rotten as a pear."

Silverstone AuctionsGiven that Ferrari values are ridiculous, and that Dinos continue to appreciate, we don't see—ahem—a little rust and water damage holding anyone back from this no-reserve diamond in the rough.

Cars & Coffee May 3 2014

I've been to quite a few carshows in my lifetime, but I have to say one of the most enjoyable shows is the monthly "Cars & Coffee". Yes us young guys know its at the worst time ever to host a car show, the crack of dawn, when were waking up, asking ourselves what happened last night with that hangover sneaking behind? Then having to drive halfway across town to a carshow that lasts 2 hours tops. The question comes to mind, is it worth it? Hell yes it is. I got dressed, hopped in the Jag, a balmy 48 degrees, no heater, barely a windshield. I arrived and was filled with an excitement few experience. The selection and variety of cars was bar none amazing. Need I say more? Watch the video. Look forward to next months, and so should you.
