Scientists at Large Hadron Collider hope to make contact with PARALLEL UNIVERSE in days

3/24/2015

The staggeringly complex LHC ‘atom smasher’ at the CERN centre in Geneva, Switzerland, will be fired up to its highest energy levels ever in a bid to detect - or even create - miniature black holes.

If successful a completely new universe will be revealed – rewriting not only the physicsbooks but the philosophy books too.

It is even possible that gravity from our own universe may ‘leak’ into this parallel universe, scientists at the LHC say.

The experiment is sure to inflame alarmist critics of the LHC, many of whom initially warned the high energy particle collider would spell the end of our universe with the creation a black hole of its own.

But so far Geneva remains intact and comfortably outside the event horizon.

Indeed the LHC has been spectacularly successful. First scientists proved the existence of the elusive Higgs boson ‘God particle’ - a key building block of the universe - and it is seemingly well on the way to nailing ‘dark matter’ - a previously undetectable theoretical possibility that is now thought to make up the majority of matter in the universe.

But next week’s experiment is considered to be a game changer.

Mir Faizal, one of the three-strong team of physicists behind the experiment, said: “Just as many parallel sheets of paper, which are two dimensional objects [breadth and length] can exist in a third dimension [height], parallel universes can also exist in higher dimensions.

“We predict that gravity can leak into extra dimensions, and if it does, then miniature black holes can be produced at the LHC.

"Normally, when people think of the multiverse, they think of the many-worlds interpretation of quantum mechanics, where every possibility is actualised.

"This cannot be tested and so it is philosophy and not science.

“This is not what we mean by parallel universes. What we mean is real universes in extra dimensions.

“We have calculated the energy at which we expect to detect these mini black holes in ‘gravity's rainbow’ [a new scientific theory].

“If we do detect mini black holes at this energy, then we will know that both gravity's rainbow and extra dimensions are correct."

When the LHC is fired up the energy is measured in Tera electron volts – a TeV is 1,000,000,000,000, or one trillion, electron Volts

So far, the LHC has searched for mini black holes at energy levels below 5.3 TeV.

But the latest study says this is too low.

Instead, the model predicts that black holes may form at energy levels of at least 9.5 TeV in six dimensions and 11.9 TeV in 10 dimensions.

UPDATE: Jeremy Clarkson Quits Top Gear, Show Cancelled for Good

3/14/2015

Petrolheads all over, ladies and gents that enjoyed Top Gear's "ambitious but rubbish" take on all things automotive, it pains us to announce that Jeremy Clarkson calls it quits in his column in The Sun.

In a piece titled "So we lose the tiger... but gain acid-spit snail," Jeremy Clarkson talks about nature's battle against extinction and the future of the Top Gear trio. Without further ado, this is how Jezza broke the silence in his most recent column for the tabloid:

"I THINK it’s fair to say that nature made a mistake when it invented the dinosaur. It was too big, too violent and with such small and puny arms it was never going to be able to operate heavy machinery or even enjoy a bit of special “me” time." Pretty easy to understand, but we haven't even got to the most tear-jearking part yet.

“All the dinosaurs died and now, years later, no-one mourns their passing. These big, imposing creatures have no place in a world which has moved on.” What these two lines point at is the dying of Top Gear as a show and how the presenter will have to move on.

Despite 880,000-plus signatures for the #BringBackClarkson petition, Jezza suggests that all our efforts were in vain: “You can start as many campaigns as you like and call on the support of politicians from all sides, but the day must come when you have to wave goodbye to the big monsters, and move on.”

This is the end and we can't do anything about it...

Fingers crossed other British broadcasting companies will bite his arm off and Clarkson will convice May and Hammond to start a new motoring show from square one. It will be hard to convince those two to jump on the bandwagon, but it won't be impossible.

Even if not for May and Hammond, if Jeremy will make a pay-per-view YouTube channel and continue filming car reviews, it'll still be enough to soothe our fevered petrolhead brows. Best of luck, Jezza!
UPDATE: Captain Slow confirmed that Top Gear is kaput in a not-so-cryptic manner.

UPDATE 2: The Mirror reports that "Jeremy Clarkson called Top Gear producer Oisin Tymon 'a lazy Irish ****," and that "Clarkson ranted for half an hour then punched him in the mouth - he was bleeding and dizzy so he had to go to hospital." In related Jeremy Clarkson news, bbc.co.uk was offline this afternoon, possibly because digital protest group Anonymous threatened an attack on the site a few days ago. So; it's been a week, and still no answer. How exactly do you pronounce 'fracas'? — James May

ORNL reveals 3D printed Shelby Cobra at the 2015 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, January 12-15. This "laboratory on wheels" honors the Shelby Cobra design, celebrating the 50th anniversary of this model and the only vehicle to be voted a national monument.

The Shelby was printed at the Department of Energy’s Manufacturing Demonstration Facility at ORNL using the BAAM (Big Area Additive Manufacturing machine and is intended as a “plug-n-play” laboratory on wheels. The Shelby was printed using 20% carbon fiber reinforced ABS material and has a Class A surface finish. The design allows integrated components to be tested and enhanced in real time, improving the use of sustainable, digital manufacturing solutions in the automotive industry.

"...besides being a cool car, it’s a great example of how a hub like this operates." —President Obama

The ORNL booth at NAIAS highlighted additional research and development activities in manufacturing and vehicle technologies including displays on energy absorption, composite tooling, printed power electronics and connected vehicles.

“My name is Fernando. I race karts. I want to be a Formula 1 driver”Alonso was unable to remember the last 20 years when he came to after his recent crash

3/5/2015

Jaws must have hit the floor when Fernando Alonso came to after his recent accident during testing at the Montmeló circuit in Barcelona. “Who are you? What do you do?” he was asked by doctors when he regained consciousness, as is standard procedure for patients who have suffered a head injury. “My name is Fernando, I race karts and I want to be a Formula 1 driver,” came the response.

While the reply might sound comical now, those who were present in the hospital in the wake of the February 22 accident found nothing to laugh about – before, at least, he was subjected to a battery of tests, all of which ruled out any kind of injury as a result of the heavy impact.

The exact reasons as to why Alonso lost control of his McLaren coming out of the third corner of the circuit are yet to be established. But the impact left his memory limited to 1995: when he came around Alonso couldn’t remember his debut with Minardi (2001), his two championship titles with Renault (2005 and 2006), nor the four Champions League wins of his favorite soccer team, Real Madrid (1998, 2000, 2002 and 2014).

According to McLaren, the decision not to let Alonso compete in the season-opener is purely a precaution

A week later and the Spanish driver had completely recovered, and while he may have to miss the first race of the season, on March 15 in Australia, he has already started to train with a view to the second, on March 29 in Sepang, Malaysia. According to the statement released on Tuesday by his team, McLaren, the decision not to let him compete in the season-opener is purely a precaution. The team said that doctors had advised him not to risk suffering a second blow to the head – although there are doubts among some as to whether this is the full story.

“For the team to cite this reason to justify the kid not racing next weekend makes no sense in this specific case,” explains Dr Rafael Blesa, the director of the neurology department at the Sant Pau Hospital in Barcelona. “Basically because, as they explain, all of the tests that were carried out on him came out OK and show that he has suffered no injuries. In that case, the brain is completely intact, just the same as it was before the accident. In no case would that first jolt have any effect should there be a second.”

Blesa is one of the most respected doctors in his field, and he believes that the memory loss suffered by Alonso is completely normal. “A concussion like that one happens because the brain suffers a blow that affects the neural synapses,” Blesa explains. “When that happens, biochemical substances do not work, meaning that the brain tries to find a memory but fails. Depending on each case, the recovery time can vary. You have to take into account the fact that, within the brain, the circuits that are most sensitive to an impact like his are connected to the memory.”

Within the brain, the circuits that are most sensitive to an impact like his are connected to the memory”

The fact that Alonso will not be in Melbourne is obviously bad news. Although without a doubt, the good news is that, medically speaking, he is ready to get behind the wheel. The concern among his colleagues after the accident was huge, as well as with his medical team. Many of them slept worse and fewer hours than the patient himself, crossing their fingers and hoping that all the tests were positive.

There are still unanswered questions, however, as to the cause of the crash. Team chief Ron Dennis held a press conference in the wake of this incident in order to clear up doubts that it may have been a technical problem that caused the Spaniard to crash, attributing instead the causes to high winds. Were the crash to have been caused by a fault, it would be a disaster for McLaren-Honda, a partnership that is still just starting out, and that has been struggling with the car so far in testing.

In any case, the most logical options in terms of explaining what happened come down to two: that the driver was indisposed and was unable to avoid the wall, or that his car had some kind of problem and sent him careening into it. The person who can best answer the question is Alonso, but first he must remember what happened, and be willing to explain it.
